The Best Backyards in Dallas Have One Thing in Common
I've walked into a lot of backyards.
Some are sprawling. Some are tiny. Some are in Highland Park, some are in Allen, some are somewhere in between. And after doing this work — really doing it, not just selling a product but designing spaces that families actually live in — I've noticed something.
The best backyards in Dallas don't have a specific square footage. They don't have a certain zip code. They don't even have a certain budget, necessarily.
The best backyards belong to people who decided to stop waiting.
The Backyard That Stopped Me in My Tracks
I'll never forget walking into this one.
There was a wood pergola in the backyard that was genuinely falling apart — swings coming off the sides, a fireplace that was literally concaving in, a style that had nothing to do with the home it was attached to. The homeowners were trying to modernize their space, create something transitional and beautiful, and this structure was working against them at every turn.
We started over.
What we built was all black — black louvers, black frame, clean and architectural and completely intentional. We used 2-inch tracks to light up the post openings where the screens slide, which gives this incredible glow that you don't expect. We added a modern wood-burning fireplace in this stunning ivory stone — you can see the veins running through it. The countertop is dark granite with this incredible texture, smooth when you look at it but you can feel the depth when you run your hand across it.
Fans. Heaters. TV. Screens. Lighting everywhere. And an outdoor kitchen designed around how this family actually lives — down to making sure the snow cone machine fit perfectly under the cabinets.
We also used our new product, Parallel, along the back wall to frame the whole space. It is sleek.
But here's what gets me every time I think about that project: this family has kids of all different ages. Their house is already the one everyone wants to come to. And I just kept thinking — they're going to be the grandparents whose grandkids actually want to visit. Not because they have the fanciest house, but because that backyard is going to be the backdrop for everything. Every birthday. Every summer. Every ordinary Tuesday that turns into something memorable.
That's what a great backyard does. It makes your home the place people want to be.
It's Not About the Neighborhood. It's About the People.
I get asked a lot — what types of homes or neighborhoods tend to have the best outdoor living setups?
Honestly? It's not about the neighborhood.
What it's really about is the people living in the house. When someone values quality, values longevity, values working with a team that's going to treat their home like it matters — that's when the magic happens. That's the client who ends up with something truly extraordinary, because they're willing to be thoughtful about it. They're not just checking a box. They're building something that belongs to them.
Any space has potential. I mean that. I've seen blank slates become dream spaces and I've seen "nothing backyards" completely transform. What I love most is when a client knows what they want but can't quite find the words for it — and I get to help them see it. Draw it out. Walk through it together. That moment when something clicks for them is genuinely one of my favorite things about this work.
The Details Nobody Talks About (But I Always Notice)
There's one thing that sounds small but changes everything: post placement.
I spend real time observing the lines in a space — the roofline, the hardscape, the architecture — before I decide where a post goes. And I always want the hardscape to beautifully wrap around each post with at least two to three inches of a border. It sounds minor. But it's the difference between something that looks intentional and something that looks like it was dropped in.
The other thing? Hidden drainage. Hidden conduit. On almost every single job we do, we find a way to run drainage underground and conceal the conduit. You might not consciously notice an exposed downspout — but you feel it. Something just looks unfinished. When every detail is resolved, the whole space reads as complete. And that's the standard I hold every project to.
Why DFW Craves This So Much
There's something specific about Dallas-Fort Worth that I think about a lot.
People here have worked hard. Really hard. And they want to invest in something that reflects that — something that lasts, that functions, that they're actually proud of. And honestly? People are just tired of complaining about the weather. The heat, the unpredictability, the springs that are gorgeous for three weeks and then suddenly it's 97 degrees. There's this moment where people stop letting the weather decide whether they get to enjoy their home.
A great outdoor space gives you that back. It gives you a place to breathe. To host. To sit outside on a weeknight and actually decompress. To be the home your kids' friends want to come to, and then years from now, the home your grandkids want to come to.
That's the lifestyle behind it. And honestly, it's why I do this work.
Goodlux Outdoor designs and installs custom motorized pergola systems for DFW homeowners. If you're ready to stop waiting and start living in your backyard, we'd love to hear about your space.
Warmly, AlyJo Chism Owner/CEO
