What If This Is the Year You Finally Use Your Backyard?
I walked outside this morning with my coffee, and the air had that crisp, clear quality that only January in Texas gives you. It's one of those rare moments when being outside feels perfect—not too hot, not too cold, just right.
And I thought: this is why we do what we do.
Because most people with beautiful backyards in Dallas never get to enjoy mornings like this. The space sits empty, waiting for the "right time" that somehow never comes.
The Dream You Keep Putting Off
I've talked to hundreds of homeowners over the years, and I hear the same story over and over:
"We've been thinking about it for years."
"We keep saying we're going to do something about the backyard."
"Someday, when we have time..."
Here's what I've learned: someday doesn't just arrive on its own. You have to decide it's here.
What 2026 Could Look Like
Imagine this version of your year:
February: You finally pull the trigger on that outdoor project you've been dreaming about. You stop waiting for the "perfect time" and just start.
May: Your space is finished, and you host your first dinner party outside. Everyone keeps saying, "Why didn't you do this sooner?"
July: While your neighbors are hiding inside from the heat, you're sitting under your pergola with a glass of wine, watching the sun set. The louvers are adjusted just right. There's a breeze. It's perfect.
November: Thanksgiving happens outside this year. Your daughter brings the grandkids over early because they want to play in the backyard. Your mom comments that this is the first holiday where everyone actually wanted to stay.
December: You look back and realize—you finally got to live in the space you've been imagining for years.
That's not fantasy. That's what happens when you stop waiting and start building.
The Permission You're Waiting For
I think sometimes we tell ourselves we don't "need" these things. An outdoor living space feels... indulgent, maybe? Like something we should put off until everything else is perfect.
But here's what I've learned from watching hundreds of families transform their backyards:
This isn't indulgent. This is intentional.
Creating a space where your family wants to gather—where you can finally host the way you've been imagining—where you actually enjoy being home? That's not frivolous. That's life.
You've worked hard to get here. You've built a beautiful home. You've earned the right to finally enjoy it.
What's Really Stopping You?
When I sit down with people and ask why they haven't done this yet, it usually comes down to three things:
1. The heat/sun/weather
"It's just too hot outside from May through September."
I get it. Texas summers are brutal. But that's exactly why modern outdoor living solutions exist—to make your space usable year-round, not just for three months in spring and fall.
2. Not knowing where to start
"We don't know what we want, or who to trust, or what's even possible."
This is where the right partner makes all the difference. Someone who listens to your dream first, not their product catalog. Someone who gets the vision immediately.
3. Waiting for the "right time"
"Maybe next year when things settle down..."
Friend, things don't settle down. Life doesn't get less busy. The kids don't stay young forever. Your parents don't stay healthy forever. The right time is now.
The Outdoor Trend That Actually Matters in 2026
You know what I'm seeing more of this year?
Not fancy pizza ovens or elaborate outdoor kitchens (though those are nice).
It's people investing in flexibility.
Spaces that can handle the unpredictable Texas weather. Structures that give you control—shade when you need it, stars when you want them, protection from rain so you never have to cancel plans.
People are tired of fighting the elements. They want to work with them.
And honestly? That's what makes an outdoor space actually get used. When you're not at the mercy of the weather, you actually go outside.
What are you dreaming about for your outdoor space this year?
I'd genuinely love to hear. Hit reply or tell me your dream—I promise I read every single message.
Here's to a year of finally living in the spaces we've been dreaming about.
Warmly,
AlyJo

A Small Suggestion for January
If you've been thinking about your outdoor space—really thinking about it, dreaming about what it could be—I want you to try something this month.
Take 15 minutes and answer these questions:
What does a perfect Saturday morning look like in your ideal backyard?
Who do you see gathering there?
What's the one thing that would make you say, "Yes, this was worth it"?
What's actually stopping you from having that?
Write it down. Get specific. Picture it.
Because here's what I've learned: the moment you get clear on the dream is usually the moment you finally start making it real.
Your Backyard Is Waiting
I don't know where you are in your journey. Maybe you're just starting to think about it. Maybe you've been planning for years. Maybe you're finally ready to pull the trigger.
Wherever you are, I just want you to know: you deserve this.
Not someday. Now.
Your backyard shouldn't be something you look at through the window. It should be where life happens.
So what if 2026 is the year you finally make it happen?
What if this is the year you stop dreaming and start living in the space you've been imagining?
I think that sounds pretty beautiful.
